Temecula is closer to San Diego but technically part of Los Angeles, making it a popular day trip from LA. Choosing which area to stay in and which hotel to book depends on the type of amenities you prefer.

I’ve narrowed the options down to three main areas that will appeal most to a wide variety of visitors. Let’s look at them now.

Old Town Temecula

Historic Old Town Temecula is full of some of Temecula’s best tourist attractions. Meander down old western streets full of saloons, restaurants, antique shops, museums, and tastings. 

The town is full of energy from dawn to dusk. A weekly farmers market and rotating live music performers keep visitors entertained at all hours. 

Staying at a hotel in Old Town like Signature Temecula means you can expect complimentary breakfast, warm hospitality, and spacious rooms with a nostalgic country flair. The town caters to families, kids, couples, and locals alike.

The best part of staying here? You’re close to pretty much everything and won’t have to drive.

• Downtown is a super walkable, delightful stroll of quaint Western buildings

East Temecula

Head to East Temecula to find many of the best wineries. Vineyard after vineyard offers tastings of Italian and Spanish grapes, Champagne, and other varietals. I still don’t know what I love more: the fairytale vineyard views or tasting the wines.

The estates are spread out so you’ll want to drive or book a public or private tour guide. Many folks even rent limos to head to the wineries in style. 

This is a great place for couples craving some romance too — Temecula is a good option for a romantic California getaway if you can’t make it up to Napa! One of the best parts of staying in a wine country hotel is the ability to wake up to acres of land right outside your room.

My favorite hotel in this area is definitely South Coast Winery Resort. Its luxurious accommodations have French doors, private terraces overlooking rolling hills, oversized marble bathrooms with deep soaking tubs, and the best spa in town!

• Picturesque landscape views
• Many of the wineries have onsite restaurants
• Quieter area for relaxation & romance 
• A quick drive or bike ride to surrounding wineries

Con of Staying in East Temecula Neighborhood:

• Wineries and restaurants close earlier in this area
• You’ll need a rental car to get around
• Vineyard property hotels are a lot pricier than other areas

South Temecula

Looking to get away from crowds and soak up the sights? In South Temecula, you get the best of both worlds. This area offers plenty of nature, but it’s less than a 20-minute drive to the famed South Coast Winery Resort and other vineyards.

The south side of Temecula has many charms — most notably its champion golf courses combined with rolling hills, and the popular Pechanga Resort Casino. Book a stay here if you’re searching for exciting activities, a variety of restaurants, and great amenities.

Another good option is the Temecula Creek Inn. It’s quiet, has a golf course, beautiful views and a butterfly garden!

You’ll probably be tempted to get out on a hike while staying in this area too. I’d recommend checking out the Santa Margarita River Trail Preserve, which is one of the best hikes in San Diego County. Most of the trails are shady, and there’s good bird-watching here too.

All the Temecula wineries have extensive tasting menus but don’t risk driving these roads tipsy. Instead, opt to stay onsite at a winery or book a spot on a historic cable car to sip your way through a handful of wineries.

Begin Your Day With the Perfect Sunrise

Early morning fans are in luck because Temecula’s mountainscape sunrises can be quite a show. The best way to see one is to book a sunrise hot air balloon ride! There are a lot to choose from, prices are reasonable, and it’s a magical must-try experience. If you’re visiting Temecula for a romantic California getaway, this should be at the top of your itinerary.

Gather Farm-to-Table Local Produce

Stop by the local farmers market if you’re visiting on a weekend. It has fantastic prices for top-quality produce. You can also find secluded picnic spots all around town. Bring a blanket and your market snacks for a fun and affordable afternoon activity.

Temecula can get an unbearable 100 degrees in the peak of summer. The most enjoyable time to visit this part of California is during fall, and in spring/early summer when there are a ton of seasonal activities.
