I couldn’t get enough of Osaka’s delicious food on my recent solo trip to Japan. The city offers some of the best places to eat in the whole country. However, the culinary scene, nightlife, and activities differ between districts. 

I loved staying in Osaka’s Nishinari neighborhood as it was affordable and peaceful. The only downside was that it was far from the city center and main attractions.

I recommend Naniwa as the best area for first-time visitors to stay, thanks to its central location and abundance of hotels. Naniwa’s Fraser Residence Nankai Osaka is my top suggested hotel because it has huge elegant rooms and excellent amenities for a reasonable price. 

This being said, the best place to stay in Osaka truly depends on what you’re looking for. I break down the pros and cons of each neighborhood below to help you decide.

6 Best Neighborhoods & Areas to Stay in Osaka

Osaka is the third largest city in Japan with a population of 2.8 million and neighborhoods that vary from party zones to quiet, local districts. While it’s a far cry from Tokyo’s size, it can still be a tad intimidating for a newcomer. Thankfully, Osaka is very well-organized and easy to explore.

Naniwa

Naniwa is right in the middle of everywhere you could possibly want to visit in Osaka. There is plenty of stuff to do without ever leaving the district, and neighborhoods like Namba and Dotonbori lie north while Nishinari lies to the south. 

Peruse the shops and restaurants along Shin Sekai with all its bright signs. Stop by Namba Yasaka Jinjya Shrine to see its lion stage. Get into Japan’s gaming culture in Nipponbashi Denden Town or appreciate sweeping views over Osaka at the top of Tsūtenkaku. 

The hotels in Naniwa are affordable but still come with perks. Fraser Residence Nankai Osaka is my best overall hotel pick for its price, location, and offerings. They have useful amenities like on-site laundry facilities and spacious rooms ranging from twin suites to two-bedroom apartments. 

Another example is Hotel Sobial Namba Daikokucho, which costs just $65 to $100 per night. However, the rooms still come with things like hypoallergenic bedding, air purifiers, and AC. 

The food in this Osaka neighborhood is also particularly delicious and can be quite cheap. At Nanbantei, visitors are treated to a traditional yakitori meal in an adorable space for less than $2.50 per skewer. 

Since there is a lot to do around Naniwa, it is often a very crowded and noisy neighborhood. This can be off-putting to visitors who want an escape from all that energy at some point.

Namba

Namba is the neighborhood right underneath Dotonbori, just a few paces away. It’s a good place to stay for people who want to be close to all that action of Osaka’s city center without being directly inside the main tourist hotspot. 

This district is rich with exceptional, low-cost food. Indulge in an affordable shabu shabu dinner at Popular Sukiyaki Hokuto or get crispy tempura from Tendon Makino. Then for dessert, try out a cream puff from the Beard Papa location in Namba. 

Namba has a fun bar scene in the evenings at spots like Bar Around the World. This watering hole has friendly servers and cocktails with a Japanese twist.  

Since Namba is in an ideal location, lots of visitors want to stay there. It can get quite busy and hotels get booked up fast during the high season. 

So, reserve a place like Swissotel Nankai Osaka ahead of time, which has one of the best locations, right in the center of Osaka near Namba Station. The hotel also has a full spa and even childcare available for a fee.

Alternatively, Hotel Royal Classic Osaka is luxurious with business and family-friendly amenities that will make staying in a crowded district like Namba much easier, such as soundproof walls, a breakfast buffet, and a business center.

Dotonbori is probably the most recognizable neighborhood in Osaka, despite being a very small strip of land. Its boat-filled canal, flashy signs, and endless street food are practically a symbol of the city. 

Dotonbori is centrally located and close to everything in Osaka. The nightlife scene around this district is diverse. There are stylish spots like Subterra Cocktail Bar and mysterious, hole-in-the-wall places, such as Bar Simon 大阪道頓堀. 

There are plenty of places to eat between sessions of partying in Dotonbori as well. Gyozaoh! Dotonbori is ideal for a budget-friendly afternoon snack. While Wanomiya Kobe Beef is more suited for a fancy date night. 

Dotonbori is one of the most popular places for tourists to stay in Osaka, which creates a few challenges since it’s such a small area. The neighborhood is usually extremely busy, especially in the evenings. 

Due to its size and popularity, accommodations are limited and you should nab your room at a spot like Cross Hotel in advance. This cozy hotel has a restaurant and coffee shop on-site, laundry services, and surprisingly spacious rooms for Japan.

• Central location
• Osaka landmarks like the Tombori River Walk
• Food for budget and luxury travelers

Visitors can’t leave Japan without buying a few keepsakes and Shinsaibashi is one of the best places in Osaka to shop for these items. This district is located in the heart of Osaka very close to other hotspots like Dotonbori, Naniwa, and Namba. 

There is a wide range of stores to wander in Shinsaibashi. You’ll find department stores, souvenir shops, and places to buy electronics. The main attraction is the fashion-forward vintage shops, like Rinkan Shinsaibashi, Calico, or ALLU. 

Alternatively, you can just make your way down Shinsaibashi-Suji Shopping Street. Here, you will be guaranteed to walk past shops, restaurants, and bright arcades that catch your eye. 

The thing that Shinsaibashi lacks is tourist attractions. So, you’ll want to stay at a place like Hotel The Flag Shinsaibashi. It’s a great hotel for being close to shops, but it’s also affordable and has direct metro access for exploring more of Osaka.

While many of Osaka’s neighborhoods are situated near each other, Umeda is located about 20 minutes away from the city center on the metro. This location is superb for business travelers and day trips because the district has direct access to Osaka Station. 

You’ll be spoiled for choice when it comes to high-end hotels in Umeda. Hotel Hankyu RESPIRE is my top hotel pick for business travelers because it has a terrific location next to Umeda Station. The hotel provides everything a business traveler might need from a fitness center to currency exchange. 

The 4-star Villa Fontaine Grand Osaka Umeda is another great choice with exceptional 24-hour staff on-site, baggage storage, and even a sauna to help relieve the tension of a work trip.

Umeda is home to a litany of cute little bars, such as Bar K and Bar Hiramatsu. The restaurants around this neighborhood are also welcoming and affordable, such as Onigiri Gorichan and Shabutei Nishi Umeda. 

The downsides to Umeda are that there aren’t many attractions and it’s a bit far from everything else in Osaka, so you will need to use the metro a lot to get around.

• Direct access to major train station
• Nice cocktail bars
• Many high-end accommodations 
• Shopping nearby

Nishinari

Nishinari is hands down the best place in Osaka to stay on a budget thanks to its cozy, cost-effective accommodations. 

I stayed at R Hotel Namba South for part of my Osaka trip and it exceeded my expectations for a budget hotel at just $50 per night. The bed was incredibly comfortable, the lobby was a nice space to work, and the staff was very sweet. Plus, Nishinari was quiet with convenience stores like 7-Eleven nearby.  

If you’re traveling as a family, you may prefer b&天下茶屋店 as it is large, spotless, and located right near the metro for easy access to Osaka attractions. Nishinari also has lots of beautiful traditional ryokans with friendly staff, such as harper house. 

The family-run restaurants in Nishinari were a highlight of Osaka for me. I ate an omakase-style sushi plate from Yama Sushi that was mind-blowing. It felt like I just wandered into a friendly family’s home for dinner and the whole meal cost less than $15. 

This part of Osaka is much more peaceful than central, touristy neighborhoods, which makes it a great place to stay for families. Since it’s more of a residential district, Nishinari does lack nightlife and attractions. However, it is easy to get to the rest of Osaka by metro.

• Well-connected by public transportation
• Quiet, residential environment

Cons of Staying in Nishinari Neighborhood:

• Outside of the main city center
• Few bars

Tips for Staying in Osaka

Be prepared for intense crowds and nightlife in the city center

Osaka’s population is less than a quarter of Tokyo’s top neighborhoods, yet it somehow felt more crowded to me. With the lively nightlife scene, everything is very intense in neighborhoods like Dotonbori and Namba. 

Avoid staying in these Osaka neighborhoods if you prefer a quiet atmosphere. 

Hop on the train and visit nearby places like Kobe and Himeji Castle

Japan’s public transportation will become your best friend when you’re staying in Osaka. It allows you to get anywhere around the city and beyond. Simply and cheaply. 

That’s why you should pencil in at least one day trip from Osaka during your time in the city. I ended up in Kobe, the city of world-famous meat, on Chinese New Year. Places like Himeji Castle, Kyoto, Nara, and others, can easily be explored from Osaka in a day. 

Hotel check-in times are extremely punctual in Osaka and Japan in general

If you’re hoping to sneak into your hotel room a couple of hours before the standard 3 pm to 4 pm check-in time, you’ll likely be out of luck. Everything in Osaka is extremely punctual, like most of Japan. 

Visitors who really need to check in at an earlier or later time should consult with their accommodations ahead of time. 

Try out trendy dishes in Dotonbori and quaint, local eateries in Nishinari

Osaka is Japan’s food capital and one of the best things to do in every neighborhood is to eat. 

Test out social media famous food for yourself around the Dotonbori district. Then, head down to Nishinari for authentic, affordable restaurants, such as Yama Sushi or Curry Yakumido. You’re bound to find mind-blowing food around every corner no matter where you’re staying. 

Go shopping, play games, and drink in Naniwa’s Shin Sekai area

Dotonbori is usually everyone’s first stop in Osaka, but don’t forget about the colorful area of Shin Sekai in the Naniwa neighborhood. 

This street leads up to Tsūtenkaku, one of the city’s biggest attractions. Shin Sekai is filled with all types of interesting places to shop, eat, and even play games at arcades that are super fun for first-time visitors in Osaka. 

Venture deeper into the Chuo Ward to see Osaka Castle or find more available hotels in the high season

The larger Chuo Ward of Osaka surrounds many of the city’s best smaller neighborhoods, such as Shinsaibashi and Dotonbori. As you’re exploring, go deeper into this ward to find cultural attractions like Osaka Castle and the Osaka Museum of History. 

If you’re having trouble finding accommodations in the tinier, busier districts, look for a hotel further into the Chuo Ward. There are a bunch of nice ones available there, even during the high season.
